Rediscovering Your Local Area

As the global pandemic enters a new phase, and people emerge from isolation, there is an opportunity to do things a little differently. On a personal scale, it's the perfect time to take a step back and analyse your life. From employment and education to hobbies and lifestyle choices, there's never been a better time to hit the reset button and start fresh. One of the best ways to emerge safely and slowly from lockdown is to spend some time rediscovering your local area.

Large chunks of Australia and New Zealand have been locked down for weeks, and all areas have been subject to travel restrictions. While life is opening up and international travel is just around the corner, you can also explore on a much smaller scale. Even tiny movements offer novelty and purpose during these strange times, from local adventures to new suburbs to day trips in neighbouring towns. You may have explored your local suburb during lockdown, and now you can discover your city, region, or state with a fresh set of eyes.

As many people discovered during lockdown, our personal sense of space and freedom is very much relative. If you haven't been able to explore your local city for weeks or even months, it can feel like a whole new world. From new parks and gardens to quirky cafes, bars, and restaurants, every corner of your city is bustling with life. Small business owners need your support more than ever, so take some time to discover local food or indulge in a new beauty treatment. There's never been a better time to discover new streets, explore new venues, and find out what makes different neighbourhoods tick.

Learning about the history of your area can be a great way to get motivated, after all, every single suburb has a story to tell. From churches and places of worship to notable architecture and sporting facilities, you can plan your journeys based on the things that matter to you. If you're able to travel beyond your city, day trips to nearby towns and national parks can be a great way to develop a new sense of purpose and place. Cities in Australia and New Zealand have so much on their doorsteps, you just need a little initiative to step outside.

As we emerge from lockdown and learn new ways to live with COVID-19, arts, entertainment, and sporting events are likely to flourish once more. From local venues to large stadiums, there are so many ways to get involved. From jazz clubs to techno nights, from African cuisine to dance classes, stepping outside your comfort zone is a great way to make your local area feel brand new. While life may look a little different going forward, there's never been a better time to discover new delights and enjoy everything that you've missed for so long.
